Louis B. Smith, Jr.

Arnold Narumiya

Joan Kathleen Pesirla

Microtecture was founded in 2006 in Ann Arbor Michigan. It remained licensed in Michigan and still provides services there. Its initial focus was upon providing excellent small project services to homeowners and businesses. The history and experience of its founder has however, pulled the firm back into neighborhood development and more traditional architectural services, as well as sustainable design.

The firm’s approach to design services is non traditional and focuses heavily on exploring the cultural values of the client or client organization; and expressing those values in its design solutions. This emphasis on cultural meaning has developed into a philosophy called Poetic Architecture.

The principles behind Poetic Architecture have been presented to over 300 architects from across the country and around the world at the AIA national conventions from 2006 through 2008. Continuing thoughts on design and inspiration can be followed on twitter. Search for and follow “poetarchitect.”

Company History

Joan brings a wealth of experience and training to our design efforts. She has worked and studied on both east and west coasts of the US as well as parts of Europe and the South Pacific. Her emphasis has been on designs which are creative yet technically sound.

Louis, the firms principle, has worked for large and small architectural firms as well as led neighborhood development projects in Detroit, MI. His sustainability experience dates back to the 1970’s when he conducted energy audits for schools and small businesses across the state of Michigan.

Louis also has extensive leadership experience with the American Institute of Architects where he served as a national committee chair in 2007. His efforts there have been to strengthen and recognize the performance of architects designing small projects.

Arnold Leads the firms production drawing efforts. He is continuing a 30 year career including structural documentation for buildings, millwork design and documentation as well as construction documents for residential and commercial buildings.
